Your Commitment as a Placement Provider
We want to ensure that the placement process is positive for both you and the student. The College, student and employer all play a vital role in ensuring this happens.
We ask you to do the following:
Health and Safety Visit
The College has a duty of care for all the students we send out on placement and our health and safety team complete checks of each provider every two years. The visit takes around half an hour and looks at the health and safety measures and liability insurance that are in place. Most companies which employ more than five workers will already have these in place. We cannot place students with companies who are sole traders unless they have employer's liability insurance.
We expect placement providers to comply with all current Health and Safety legislation and treat the student as an employee in this respect.
However we would ask that they are not expected to use any machinery or hazardous goods such as hairdressing or beauty chemicals and in such areas we would ask that they observe only. This applies to manual handling as well as the majority of our students do not have the necessary training qualification.
Induction Programme
Providing a good induction programme at the start will ensure the student fully understands your business and their role in it, and should cover the areas of fire safety procedures, toilet and eating facilities and other matters relevant to their safety and comfort.
Designated Member of Staff
We ask you to designate a member of staff who will supervise the student while they are on their placement.
Is there paperwork involved?
Student complete a Student Placement Agreement that has to be signed by the person responsible for them for the placement period. A copy of this can be obtained from the Placement Co-ordinator if you would like to see it prior to a placement commencing. They will also sign Confidentiality Agreements to cover their time in your work place and information they may be party to.
They will often also have a log book to complete and some will have assignments to do during their time.
