CIPD: Foundation Diploma in Human Resource Practice (Level 3): Part 2

These are recognised qualifications for those students who are either looking to start or advance a career in human resources.  Completion of one of these qualifications provides the required knowledge element for Associate professional level CIPD membership.  Learners must demonstrate, to CIPD directly, that they have relevant experience and can apply for a membership assessment to assess their workplace activities and behaviours.  If successful in this process, you will qualify for the new Associate professional level of CIPD membership. 


A career in human resources has a high potential to take you places.  These courses are a great way to develop your skills and career prospects.  They are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD), the largest human resources and development professional body in Europe.

This course will enable you to broaden and deepen your knowledge and skills while providing an ideal opportunity for supporting continuing professional development.  This qualification is perfect if you want to acquire a wide range of relevant skills in HR and development.  You will learn the fundamentals of HR practice and build a firm foundation on which to base a successful career in human resources.

The CIPD: Foundation Certificate and Diploma in Human Resource Practice (Level 3) courses are offered in 2 parts to ensure accessibility for self-financing students.  It is offered as follows:

Certificate or Diploma (Part 1) – Core Units + 1 Option (16 credits)

Diploma (Part 2) – Additional Units (21 credits)

NB: Part 1 must be completed before Part 2

Study Option: Blended Learning (combination of distance learning in partnership with ICS Educate with certain taught components)


To achieve the CIPD Diploma in Human Resource Practice, you need a total of 37 credits, 16 from part 1 and a further 21 from the following units:

Additional Units (21 credits):

  • Supporting Good Practice in Performance and Reward Management* (6 credits)
  • Supporting Good Practice in Managing Employment Relations (6 credits)
  • Delivering Learning and Development Activities* (6 credits)
  • Supporting Change within Organisations (3 credits)

NB * Mandatory attendance at workshops is required for these units.

How will I be assessed? Assessment will take the form of:

  • Personal Development Plans
  • Portfolios
  • Case Studies
  • Skills assignments with written tasks


Part 1 of this course must be completed.  You must be proficient in the English language and   knowledge of or experience in human resource support or management would be beneficial. 


You must have access to email and the Internet to complete this course.


Intakes February, June & October each year, for each part. To allow for administration and induction, booking will close 2 weeks prior to the course start date (the first working day of the month).

Please note: Students must hold membership of CIPD to receive their Certificate or Diploma in Human Resource Practice.

If you have not already done so, you must become a student member of CIPD. Membership fees are payable directly to CIPD, and are not included in the course fee.

Successful completion of this award will equip you to take on a support-level role in any Human Resource department.  Successful students have the option to complete and online access course through The Robert Gordon University which would allow them to enrol on the post graduate degree which leads to the full qualification.  In some cases successful students can get directly onto the post graduate degree if they have a certain amount of experience. This is subject to interview.

Alternatively, higher level CIPD qualifications are available through ICS Educate on a distance learning basis.
