Where is the Centre located?
Aberdeen College IT Centre is located on the lower ground floor of the Gallowgate Centre tower block (see map). Another IT Centre also exists at the Clinterty Centre, Kinellar and is located in the library.
When can I use the IT Centre?
Students at Aberdeen College can access the IT Centre at anytime during the opening hours. The Flexible Use area is available for general academic use by staff and students. Limited personal use may also be made in accordance with the college computer regulations. Also, students can access lessons and computer files out side the college by using Blackboard or the S-Desktop feature. These can both be found in the Student Portal.
Can I eat and drink in the IT Centre?
Both liquid and crumbs can damage computers. We regret that eating and drinking is not permitted in the IT Centre. You may eat and drink in the student canteen or the new student lounge near the Loch Street entrance during class breaks.
Can I smoke in the IT Centre?
The IT Centre, like the rest of Aberdeen College, is a non-smoking environment.
Where are the nearest toilets?
Toilet facilities are provided close by. They are marked on the map on this web site; other wise, ask at the IT Centre reception desk for directions.
What should I do if there is a fire alarm?
Full fire safety regulations are given later on this induction page. You should read these carefully before going to the centre.
Are there special facilities available for people with disabilities?
There is full access to the IT Centre for people with disabilities. We have a number of large trackerball mice, flexi keyboards, and adjustable desks available. If you require any assistance, please contact a member of the IT Centre Staff.
Will I need headphones to use multimedia packages?
Headphones are provided in the IT Centre, but students can also bring their own if preferred.
Can I access the Internet in the IT Centre?
Only if you are taking an Internet course, or use the Internet as part of another course will you be able to access the Internet through the IT Centre. You might use it in researching a topic you are covering as part of a course, for example. Internet facilities are not for recreational use. Where the Internet is used, this usage must be in accordance with College computing regulations. You must not use College computers to access unacceptable materials on the Internet. Examples of these are pornographic, violent or racist materials and materials that violate the College's Equal Opportunities Policy. By signing your enrolment form, you have agreed to abide by both the Aberdeen College Computer Regulations and the UKERNA JANET Acceptable Use Policy. An easy guide to Computer Use in the College and the Computer Regulations are available on this page and the regulations are also on display in the Information Technology Centre.
Can I use the IT Centre to play computer games/access chat rooms?
As stated above, the IT Centre and the Internet access gained from it are for study, not recreation. Do not install computer games on machines in the Centre. Similarly, do not use the Centre to access chat rooms on the Internet. If you are found misusing the IT Centre in any of the ways outlined, this may lead to disciplinary action being taken against you.
Can I buy disks in the IT Centre?
Floppy disks, CDs and DVDs can be purchased at IT Centre reception.
Can I use the IT Centre to print out my work?
All the machines in the IT Centre are connected to black & white and colour printers. However, in an effort to help the environment and save paper, we do ask that you check your work on-screen before printing, and that you use the recycle bins situated next to each printer for any waste paper. Printing must be paid for in advance and costs 3p per sheet for black & white. A4 colour pages are 50p a sheet and colour A3 is £1 per sheet. Printing can be paid for at IT Centre reception, the top-up machine in the IT Centre or at the college library.
What should I do if I have a complaint or a problem with the IT Centre?
