GENERAL INTRODUCTION
THE EUROPEAN CREDIT TRANSFER SYSTEM (ECTS)
The European Credit Transfer system (ECTS) allows students following Higher Education Courses within countries of the European Union (EU) to obtain a qualification which may allow them to move from one country to another (within the EU) and have their qualification fully recognised.
Educational institutions operating courses under ECTS allocate credits to courses. One year's study of Higher Education is worth 60 ECTS credits. Each course unit is allocated a credit rating.
A full year's study in another EU country is therefore worth 60 ECTS credits. A semester spent abroad (approximately 18-20 weeks) would be worth 30 ECTS credits.
